In spring 2015 Emily McIntyre took on a brand-new coffee business as a client, the innovative coffee marketplace Crema.co. Initially engaged to develop the messaging / UX design and to act as liaison with reputable coffee roasters, Emily spent the next three years filling a wide variety of roles with company: in February 2016 she took a cofounder role and stepped in as Coffee Director, and—when the company sold to coffee entrepreneur Michael Klassen (of Blue Tiger Coffee)—she stepped in as General Manager. During her tenure with the company Crema.co grew to be one of the largest coffee subscriptions in the American market, participated in 500 Startups’ Batch 19, and developed a robust coffee storytelling focus, along with proprietary coffee algorithms and other technology.

Emily served as the guiding voice of Crema.co through 2018. Additionally, Catalyst has provided quality control and coffee curation since 2015.

The lab / Caffeine crawl

Emily’s tenure with The LAB, a boutique beverage marketing company based in Kansas City, covered enormous ground. In a wide-ranging role that included writing copy for clients like Baratza and Unic, organizing more than a dozen Caffeine Crawl events, and performing PR and social media marketing tasks for a wide variety of clients, she represented the company on the West Coast in the 2013-15 window. She also collaborated on drinks menus, wrote articles on many aspects of the beverage industry, and became a bona-fide cocktail geek.

As a Caffeine Crawl representative, Emily personally launched and led the first San Diego, Sacramento, and Portland Caffeine Crawls in 2013 and 2014.

In 2015, Emily stepped in to consult with Alliance for Coffee Excellence / Cup of Excellence on marketing, social media, and communications. During her time with ACE, she worked closely with partner organizations in nine coffee-producing countries to coordinate the documentation and storytelling on every winning lot at auction, created and executed the marketing strategy, and organized promotional events in a variety of locations. She also coordinated ACE’s rebrand, coordinated the marketing push for Starbucks’ first coffee purchase from ACE, and hosted international ACE members in Portland.

For years, Michael and Emily have worked with Caravan Coffee in a variety of capacities. Whether Michael is sitting as panelist for their outstanding series on coffee roasting, Emily writing blog posts and acting as photographer for coffee competitions, or providing outstanding Ethiopian coffees, the truth is: we love working together and will keep doing it for, hopefully, centuries.
