ABYSSINIA

An ancient land of intricacies, interwoven cultures, histories, and religions, Ethiopia is the genealogical mother of Coffea arabica

Ethiopia -- from the Greek meaning "land of those with the sunburned faces" -- houses a population of over 100 million comprised of over 100 ethnic groups, 82 languages, and four major religions. Contained within its present-day boundaries are nine UNESCO World Heritage sites (8 cultural plus the Simien National Park) and five tentative (or "nominated") sites, countless paleontological digs, and ancient forests, including where the first native coffee trees were harvested in Lekempt.

Ethiopia is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on the planet.

ETHIOPIA

Considered home to one of the lost tribes of Israel (the "Falashas"), it is also the country that Muhammad turned to in exile escaping political persecution in Mecca, finding sanctuary in the Christian Kingdom of Aksum. Negash, now part of the Tigray Region, is the first muslim settlement in Africa. The second nation to embrace Christianity after Armenia (although some biblical scholars contend it is the first), Christianity was officially adopted as a state religion in 333 AD -- 1,000 years before it reached the rest of the continent. Christianity here dates back to the founding of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. King Menelik I, purported son of King Solomon of Israel and Makeda (aka the Queen of Sheba -- or Seba, now in present day Yemen), founded  the Solomonic Empire, one of the longest reigning monarchies in human history. It ended not until Haile Selassie's (aka Ras Tafari's) ouster by the communist Derg in 1974. English and Amharic -- the root language of Hebrew and Arabic -- are the two official languages. Discovery of the earliest human bones, roughly 4.5 million years old, in the hills above the Awash River indicate that the Great Rift Valley was the cradle of one of the first civilizations.  Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa, and  -- other than a brief, four-year occupation by Mussolini -- it the only country on the continent to have never been colonized (a tremendous source of pride across the continent and among many within the far-reaching African diaspora). It is present-day home to the Ark of the Covenant, a wealth of human diversity, and some of the most beautiful coffees found on earth.
