HARAR

Harar is a land of centuries of mystical coffee traditions. The walled city of Harar is seen as the fourth holiest in Islam, which creates a dynamic of sacred pride in this heritage. (It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site.) Deep in the past, Harar coffee crossed the Red Sea to be planted and venerated in Yemen, and through the Middle East and in Saudi Arabia in particular, Harar coffee is prized for its quality, flavor profile, and history. This creates a unique market dynamic of Harar coffees being more expensive and sometimes harder to obtain than other Ethiopian coffees. Another difficulty in Harar's coffee supply chain is the lack of central processing stations for communities, which makes logistics surrounding drying, hulling, sorting, and transporting coffees harder. All Harari coffees are required by law to export from the city of Dire Dawa, which means they ship separately from other Ethiopian coffees.

As many coffee folks who've been around a while know, some of the best innovations in Ethiopia's past come from Harar, with Mohammed Oksady's famed "MAO Horse" coffee brand. Many roasters treasure its iconic horse logo. With Oksady's death and the initation of the ECX, Harari specialty coffee took a hit. The TCPCA project is one of the first to arise in the new landscape of Harar coffee and has the potential to redefine expectations and profiles coming from this corner of the country.

The stimulant chat (or 'kaat') has a strong cultural foothold here and indeed is beating coffee as a cash crop in some parts of the zone. Harari culture is strong, in many ways separate from the rest of Ethiopia, and has captivated visitors from many cultures, such as the poet Arthur Rimbaud. Rimbaud even worked as a coffee sourcing agent for exporters. He was captivated by its mystery as much as we all are!

Our commitment to the people of Gololcha

Gololcha is situated in the most beautiful little slice of the world. All highland (1800-2300 meters). Incredible, natural topography and coffees that burst ripe in unity. Going on two years ago now, the community leader, Abebayehu Negash, learned what we were doing with Dominion Trading, and rode 2 days to meet us and deliver coffee to us. He was so distressed at the way the coffee market works in Ethiopia that he was just about ready to tear out all of his coffee and replace it with teff grain. He longed for a true collaborative partnership, and we just fell in love with his passion and commitment. 

One cool thing about the Tiret Coop is that there is anatural spring situated in the midst of the community. This provides ready acces to tapping it for good, reliable and clean drinking water supply. Also, it has never ever been done anywhere in Harar, but this spring also provides the opportunity to create the first ever micro washing station in all of Harar. It could truly change the world! That would be a long term project, of course, but the people are willing. Currently, Harar coffees are skewed in the market, because it is a source of national pride for Ethiopia. Harar is the area where commercial trade of coffee really began in Ethiopia. Therefore, it tends to be priced higher than it really should be. Similar to Yemen coffees for example. No doubt, the outstanding cup quality potential is there, but there is a lot of grace given to Harar coffees from within. It is not uncommon to have a gr. 4 Harar selling for as much as a Gr. 1 Guji or Sidamo. The prices we established with Tiret are all quality incentive driven. So our goal is to work each year to ever improve each farm (and these are actually farms of 3-12 hectares, unlike everywhere else in Ethiopia) and separate the top lots as micro lots and reward those producers with a premium. The remaining lots are determined as blend component. For example, this year we had 10 lots that were really standout from previous years. We opted to micro lot 5 individual farms and take the remaining 5 and build a community blend.
